Our Beginning Class, A Three Hour Introduction:

tackle discussion
knot tying
a study of aquatic insects
how to select flies
the use of Orvis tackle ( rod & reel)
casting instruction (no flies will be used while casting)
this class is from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Monday through Saturday
the cost is $115.00 per person

Our One Day School:

the Beginning three hour class
on stream instruction, which covers:
how to fish a dry fly, nymph and a streamer
how to read a stream
advanced casting techniques and stream tactics
the use of Orvis tackle (waders, boots, rod 7 reel)
this school is available every day from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
the cost of this school is $205.00 per person

Fly Fishing Small Streams : A Focused Class For All Skill Levels

The typical eastern stream is lined with Rhododendron and the fish use this cover for protection. In this class you will learn the casting techniques needed to target these fish. The morning's activities consist of casting instruction on a pond, leader formulas, and the equipment needed to fish in tight cover. After lunch we will move to a local small stream where instructors will demonstrate these casts. You will also study aquatic insects and their life cycles and learn about the food chain in small streams.

This class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm
The cost of this class is $150.00 per person

Entomology on the Davidson River : A Focused Class

The Davidson River in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard has one of the richest insect populations of any river in the United States. In this class you will learn to identify insects, choose the right fly for selective trout, understand the nutritional value for the different insects, and more. You will be in the river to observe and collect insects. Wading boots will be provided and we encourage you to bring an extra pair of socks.

The cost of this class is $65.00 per person

Class limited to 8 persons, and a minimum of 4 is required.

Advanced Casting Techniques : For The Experienced Caster

This all day class focuses on the casting techniques necessary to fish a large river at every angle and every current. We will start on a pond and learn the reach cast, curve cast, slack line cast, steeple cast, and roll cast pick-up. Then we will move to the Tuckasegee River and put these casts to practice.

Nymphing Tactics : For The Experienced Caster

Nymphing is the most effective way to catch fish year-round. Nymphs represent 90% of a trout's diet. This class focuses on the casting techniques needed for different current speeds, water depth, and fly weight. Casting instruction is held in the morning on a pond. In the afternoon you will move to a river where there will be a study of nymphs in their habitat. You will then put your casting skills to practice on the river.

Deposit and Cancellation Policy:

Our three-hour Beginning Class and All-Day Schools require a 50% deposit to hold your date. If a cancellation is made five days prior to the trip, deposits will be honored for rescheduling. Cancellations after store hours the night before the scheduled trip and "no-shows" will be charged the full amount.

Weather: We make the call on the weather. We do fish in the rain to honor those that are willing to do so.

Exceptions: If we decide the weather is too bad we will cancel a trip. Medical emeergencies. In these situations the deposit will be honored for a rescheduled date.

Things You Need:

You will need a North Carolina fishing license for all day schools. For the classes involving fishing you will need to purchase the flies and leaders you will need for the day. You will need to bring a lunch or you can stop for a sandwich on your way to the stream (except on Sundays). You do not need to rent rod/reels, waders, or boots. We provide Orvis tackle.

Things We Recommend:

We strongly urge that you wear glasses. Flies can end up in the most inconvenient places. Polarized sunglasses are the best. The reduce glare for clearer vision. If you are not wearing waders it is a good idea to have quick-dry clothing. Thick socks are best for wading with or without waders. We recommend merino wool. Hat, sunblock, water, camera, a change of clothes.
